How badges work, and why I built them this way

How do badges work in CanMog?
Badges in CanMog reward variety, not volume. There are five families: Shelf (different cans), Explorer (different brands), Brand Collector (different cans of one brand), Trailblazer (first ever finds) and Streak (days in a row). Each has levels. Only new, different cans count, never duplicates. Badges are free for everyone and, once earned, they are yours forever.
Key takeaways
- CanMog has five badge families: Shelf, Explorer, Brand Collector, Trailblazer and Streak, and each family has three or four levels.
- Badges count different cans and brands only, so a duplicate or a second copy of a can never counts toward a badge.
- The Streak badge is the exception: any scan keeps the day, also a re-scan of a can you already own.
- Brand Collector III needs 30 different cans of one brand, so for a small brand the Explorer and Shelf badges are the better goal.
- Badges are free for everyone, the server awards them, and once you earn a badge you keep it forever.
Since the badge update, you sent me a lot of good questions. Do duplicates count? Can a small brand ever get the top level? Here is every rule in one place, and why I made each one.
What the badges are
A badge marks a milestone in your collection. There are five families, and each one levels up:
| Badge | What it counts | Levels |
|---|---|---|
| Shelf I–IV | different cans on your shelves | 10 · 25 · 50 · 150 |
| Explorer I–III | different brands | 5 · 10 · 25 |
| Brand Collector I–III | different cans of one brand, e.g. "Monster Collector" | 5 · 10 · 30 |
| Trailblazer I–III | first ever finds | 1 · 5 · 40 |
| Streak I–III | days in a row with a scan | 7 · 30 · 100 |
You get one Brand Collector badge per brand. Many of you hold four or five of them at once.

Open your profile and tap your badges to see all of them. The "Almost there" list shows how close you are to the next level, for example "Monster cans: 9 / 10".
Do duplicates count?
No. This was the first question I got, and the answer is short: badges count different drinks. A second can of the same flavor does not count, and ten copies count once.
This is the same rule as rarity and points. CanMog is about variety: new flavors, new brands, cans nobody else has found. If copies counted, the fastest way to a badge would be to buy and drink more of the same can. I do not want the game to push anyone to do that.
Why does the streak count any scan?
The Streak badge is the one exception. It counts days, not cans. Any scan keeps your day, also a re-scan of a can you already own.
So a streak never needs a new can. You can scan a can from your shelf and keep the day. A streak should reward showing up, not drinking more.
Can a small brand get Collector III?
Today, every brand has the same levels: 5, 10 and 30 different cans. A player wrote to me that a brand with 8 flavors can never reach level III, and that is true.
I set level III high on purpose. The top level of each badge is rare: when I set the levels, only a handful of players had one. It also makes a feed post, so your friends see it.
What to do with a small brand:
- Get level I. Five different cans of one brand is reachable for most brands.
- Go wide with Explorer. Explorer counts brands, so every small brand you try moves you up.
- Fill your Shelf. Every new can counts toward Shelf, whatever the brand.
I am looking at levels that fit the size of a brand. I have not decided yet, because a 3-flavor brand must not become a free gold badge.
What is a Trailblazer?
A can is a first ever find when you are the first CanMog player to scan its barcode. You get 50 bonus points, the app shows "FIRST EVER FIND", and the can counts toward Trailblazer.
Small brands, local shops and cans from other countries are where first finds hide. That is the same place where the rarest cans are. Read how rarity works for the details.
How do I get a badge?
You do not claim anything. The server checks your collection after each scan and gives you every badge you reached. Then the app shows "Badge unlocked".

The server decides, not the phone. So every app version gives the same badges, and nobody can get one by changing the app. An old app version cannot show badges, so update the app if you do not see them.
Can I lose a badge?
No. Once you earn a badge, it is yours forever.
I made this rule after the rarity fix on October 13. Many of you saw your score go down, and that felt like a reset. I do not want that to happen with badges. So if a can's rarity changes, a barcode is merged, or you lose your streak, your badges stay.
What is a title?
Pick one badge as your title. It shows under your name on your profile, in chats and on the leaderboard. Tap "Pick my title" on the badge screen, or open your badges from your profile.

Other players can open your badges from your profile, and you can open theirs.
Do I need Premium?
No. Every player earns the same badges at the same levels, free. Premium adds a frame and an animated shine to your badges and your title. That is all.
What is next?
Another player asked for limited-time badges for holidays. I liked the idea. I am working on them now, and the first one is planned for Thanksgiving week. The rule will be the same as for every other badge: a new can counts, a duplicate does not.
Keep the questions coming. Write to me from the app or on the support page, and I will add the answers here.

Frequently asked questions
Do duplicates count toward badges?
No. Shelf, Explorer, Brand Collector and Trailblazer count different drinks only. Ten cans of the same flavor count once. Only the Streak badge counts any scan, because it measures days, not cans.
Can I get Brand Collector III for a small brand?
Brand Collector III needs 30 different cans of one brand, and every brand has the same levels: 5, 10 and 30. A brand with only 8 flavors can reach level I, not level III. For small brands, go for Explorer, which counts different brands.
What is a first ever find?
A can is a first ever find when you are the first CanMog player to scan its barcode. You get 50 bonus points, and the can counts toward the Trailblazer badge: 1, 5 and 40 first finds.
Can I lose a badge?
No. A badge is earned once and kept forever, even if a can's rarity changes later or you lose your streak.
Do I need Premium for badges?
No. Every player earns and shows the same badges at the same levels. Premium only adds a frame and an animated shine to your badges and your title.
