Which Sodas Have Caffeine? Sprite, Coke, Root Beer and More

Does Sprite have caffeine?
Sprite has no caffeine, and neither do Sprite Zero Sugar, Fanta, 7UP, A&W Root Beer, Mug Root Beer and Canada Dry Ginger Ale. The colas do have caffeine: per 12 fl oz can, Coca-Cola and Coke Zero Sugar have 34 mg, Diet Coke 46 mg, Pepsi 38 mg and Diet Dr Pepper 41 mg. Barq's Root Beer has 22 mg.
Key takeaways
- Sprite, Sprite Zero Sugar, Fanta, 7UP, A&W Root Beer, Mug Root Beer and Canada Dry Ginger Ale have no caffeine.
- Per 12 fl oz can, Coca-Cola and Coca-Cola Zero Sugar have 34 mg of caffeine, Diet Coke 46 mg, Pepsi and Pepsi Zero Sugar 38 mg, Diet Pepsi 35 mg, and Diet Dr Pepper and Dr Pepper Zero Sugar 41 mg.
- Root beer splits by brand: regular Barq's has 22 mg per 12 fl oz, while Barq's Zero Sugar, A&W and Mug are caffeine-free.
- Coca-Cola, Diet Coke, Coke Zero Sugar and Pepsi all come in caffeine-free versions, which are separate cans with their own barcodes.
- In CanMog, a soda with known caffeine counts on the Energy shelf and also shows on the Soda shelf, while a caffeine-free soda counts on the Soda shelf only.
Does Sprite have caffeine, and does Coke Zero have caffeine too? Sprite has none and a Coke Zero Sugar can has 34 mg, and that split decides where each can goes on your shelf. Here is every big US soda checked, with the caffeine per can from the maker's own page and the number of collectors who own each can.
Does Sprite have caffeine, and why it matters for your shelf
Sprite has no caffeine. The Sprite label on Coca-Cola's Sprite page says "No caffeine" for Sprite, Sprite Zero Sugar and Sprite Chill. Coca-Cola's own caffeine FAQ also names Sprite and Sprite Zero as caffeine-free drinks.
For a collector, caffeine is more than a label detail. In CanMog, it decides which shelf a soda can counts on.
Two shelves, one can
CanMog has four shelves: Energy, Soda, Water and Kombucha. A soda with known caffeine counts on the Energy shelf and also shows on the Soda shelf. A caffeine-free soda counts on the Soda shelf only.
So a Coke Zero Sugar can works for two shelves, and a Sprite can works for one. Neither one is better. They are different cans to find, and a full soda shelf needs both kinds.

How to check any soda can, step by step
Checking the caffeine of any soda can takes under a minute. The same five steps work for every can on the list.
- Turn the can around. US soda cans print the caffeine near the Nutrition Facts label. Coca-Cola says so in its caffeine FAQ, and its labels end with lines like "CAFFEINE CONTENT: 22 mg/12 fl oz".
- Read the ingredients. If "caffeine" is not in the list, the can has none. Coca-Cola Zero Sugar lists caffeine. Sprite lists none.
- Look for the words "Caffeine Free". Caffeine-free twins of the colas print it on the can. Caffeine-Free Diet Coke is a different can from Diet Coke, with its own barcode.
- Check the maker's page. Coca-Cola, PepsiCo and Keurig Dr Pepper all publish product facts with the caffeine per size. The links in the table go straight to them.
- Scan it. Open CanMog, scan the barcode, and confirm it is a can. The app files it on the right shelf for you.

The part people get wrong: the can size
Caffeine numbers only make sense with a size. Keurig Dr Pepper lists about 68 mg in a 20 fl oz bottle of Dr Pepper, which works out to about 41 mg per 12 fl oz. PepsiCo lists 63 mg for a 20 fl oz Pepsi and 38 mg for a 12 fl oz can.
Compare cans of the same size. Every number in the table below is for a 12 fl oz can unless the row says otherwise.
Which sodas have caffeine: the big US cans
The big US sodas split into two groups: the colas, Dr Pepper, Barq's, Mr. Pibb and Mello Yello have caffeine, while Sprite, Fanta, 7UP, A&W and ginger ale have none. Each caffeine number comes from the maker's own page.
I pulled the owner counts from the CanMog database on October 24, 2026; they are Soda shelf counts, and "not tracked" means no clean key for that can yet.

Three brands have their own checklists on this blog, so they get one line here. Mountain Dew has caffeine: PepsiCo lists 91 mg in a 20 fl oz bottle. Poppi and Olipop also get their own flavor checklists, so they are left out of this table.
Caffeine-free twins of the colas
Most big colas come in a caffeine-free version. Coca-Cola lists Caffeine-Free Coca-Cola, Caffeine-Free Diet Coke and Caffeine-Free Coca-Cola Zero Sugar in its caffeine FAQ. PepsiCo lists Pepsi Caffeine Free at 0 mg per 12 fl oz, and Diet Pepsi Caffeine Free has 0 mg as well.
These twins are separate cans for your checklist. As of October 24, 2026, Caffeine-Free Diet Coke had 2 owners on the Soda shelf, Common. It counts on the Soda shelf only, while regular Diet Coke also counts on Energy.
Root beer: Barq's vs A&W vs Mug
Root beer is where most people guess wrong. Regular Barq's has caffeine: the label on Coca-Cola's Barq's page reads "CAFFEINE CONTENT: 22 mg/12 fl oz". The same page says Barq's Zero Sugar Root Beer is caffeine free.
A&W Root Beer is caffeine-free on Keurig Dr Pepper's product page. Mug Root Beer, a PepsiCo brand, lists 0 mg of caffeine in its Wikipedia nutrition table. The Barq's article on Wikipedia notes the same split: some Barq's formulas contain caffeine and diet Barq's has none.
For your shelf, that gives three root beer cans with three different results. Regular Barq's counts on Energy and Soda. Barq's Zero Sugar, A&W and Mug count on Soda only.
As of October 24, 2026, Barq's Zero Sugar had 3 owners on the Soda shelf, Uncommon, while regular Barq's and A&W had 1 owner each.

Ginger ale and the green tea exception
Plain ginger ale has no caffeine. Canada Dry Ginger Ale is marked "No Caffeine", and Coca-Cola calls Seagram's Ginger Ale caffeine-free.
One ginger ale breaks the rule. Canada Dry Green Tea Flavored Ginger Ale contains about 9 mg of caffeine per 12 fl oz, from the green tea. Do not assume a flavor follows its brand.
How to measure your soda collection
Your Soda shelf has its own score, so you can track it apart from Energy. These signals tell you if the shelf is growing in the right way:
- Both kinds: Do you have caffeinated and caffeine-free cans? A shelf of only colas misses half the list.
- Twins: For each cola you own, do you also own its caffeine-free twin? That is a second can for every brand.
- Makers: Do you have cans from all three big makers? Coca-Cola, PepsiCo and Keurig Dr Pepper each have caffeine-free and caffeinated cans.
- Tiers: Do any of your cans show a tier above Common? The rarity tiers go by how many players own a can.
A weekly test
Once a week, open the Soda shelf and count new different cans, not total cans. Ten cans of the same Sprite count once, so only new barcodes move the score. Compare the count with last week and write down which makers are still missing.
Common mistakes and edge cases
Soda caffeine mistakes come from names, sizes and bottles:
- Mistake: thinking "diet" means less caffeine. Diet Coke has 46 mg per 12 fl oz and classic Coca-Cola has 34 mg. Check each can.
- Mistake: thinking all root beer is caffeine-free. Regular Barq's has 22 mg. Barq's Zero Sugar has none, so the two cans land on different shelves.
- Mistake: comparing a bottle with a can. A 20 fl oz bottle always shows a bigger number than a 12 fl oz can of the same drink. Compare the same size.
- Mistake: thinking "+ Tea" means caffeine. Coca-Cola's Sprite page lists Sprite + Tea with "NO CAFFEINE." on the label. Read the can, not the name.
- Mistake: scanning a bottle. CanMog collects cans only and asks "Is it a can?" before it counts. Bottles of the same drink do not go on your shelf.
Owner counts that look wrong
You may see Sprite with 1 owner listed as Common. That is the shop floor for big brands: a can you can buy in almost any store does not become Legendary because few players scanned it yet. How rarity works explains the floor and the tier limits.
The rarest soda finds are cans the catalog does not know yet: regional sodas, imports and limited runs. If nobody owns a can yet, you could be the first player to scan it. Points for a can never drop below the tier you found it at.
Your soda caffeine checklist and next steps
A soda caffeine checklist for your next store run has six groups of cans:
- Caffeinated colas: Coca-Cola, Coca-Cola Zero Sugar, Diet Coke, Pepsi, Pepsi Zero Sugar, Diet Pepsi, Dr Pepper, Diet Dr Pepper, Dr Pepper Zero Sugar.
- Caffeine-free twins: Caffeine-Free Coca-Cola, Caffeine-Free Diet Coke, Coca-Cola Zero Sugar Caffeine Free, Pepsi Caffeine Free.
- Root beer trio: regular Barq's (22 mg), Barq's Zero Sugar, A&W and Mug.
- Clear and orange cans: Sprite, Sprite Zero Sugar, 7UP, Fanta Orange.
- Ginger ale: Canada Dry, Seagram's, and the Canada Dry Green Tea can with 9 mg.
- Wild cards: Mr. Pibb (54 mg) and Mello Yello, two caffeinated Coca-Cola sodas that few players own so far.
Each different can on this list earns its own spot, and badges like Shelf and Brand Collector count different cans, never duplicates. How badges work has the levels. The FAQ on the home page covers the rest of the rules.
